Most of the "islands" in the 10,000 Islands aren't islands at all! At least not yet. For now, they are clumps of red mangroves growing in the shallow waters. Given enough time and the right conditions a sandy beach may build up and continue to grow.
Local legend tells that the name came about after a man took on the task of counting each island. After a time, he simply gave up in frustration, saying; "There must be ten thousand of them."
